This article discusses the development of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) from early remotecontrolled tele-robotic systems through the increased sophistication afforded by the advances in communications and sensor technologies. The enormous challenges associated with the autonomous operation of UAVs are considered, especially in light of the problems and issues associated with the relationship between the human operator and the UAV.
