Today the UK faces adversaries whose tactics change rapidly and employ ever more varied advanced and innovative technologies. This demands rapid evolution in our response, both tactically and in the technologies we deploy to combat the threats. Our task is to anticipate, prepare and meet the forthcoming challenges by being highly innovative, agile and flexible in our approach to defence science and technology.

This can only be achieved by working with the UK science and technology supplier base, reaching much wider than our traditional defence suppliers to engage with ideas and technology from the full spectrum of UK talent.

The Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, brings together inventors, investors, entrepreneurs, and academics to incubate new businesses and technologies with defence and other applications.

The Grand Challenge was a competition for businesses, universities, schools and inventors to apply the latest technology in an innovative way to solve a crucial operational challenge.

The Defence Technology Centres are joint MOD-Industry research centres, bringing together business and academia to develop new technologies across a number of key themes.
