07/10/2010 - Glyndwr University, Wrexham
The Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) is the Ministry of Defence’s open portal for good ideas and innovative science that can be used in defence applications. CDE in conjunction with The Business Innovation Program of The Welsh Assembly Government, will be holding two seminars at Glyndwr University on Thursday 7th October. Each seminar must be booked separately. The afternoon seminar “Sensing on the Battlefield” will provide a briefing on the issues and challenges of using sensors on the modern battlefield. It will highlight the areas where new technology and inspired innovation could make a difference in the future.
A range of defence speakers will cover the role of sensors, lasers, optics, radar et al; on the modern battlefield, as well as those the direction of travel in current developments. Speakers will also address some of the key challenges for sensors on the battlefield now and in the future.
- Providing constant surveillance over a large area.
- Detecting, identifying and tracking through camouflage and deception.
- Detection of explosives and IEDs.
- Processing and automation to manage the huge amounts of information generated by sensors, which otherwise place great demands on communication systems and operators.
- Continuing to improve performance (range, sensitivity, automation), size, power consumption but with a reducing cost.
- Flexibility and agility to develop and adapt.
In particular the event is seeking to encourage ideas and innovation along two particular axis
- Encourage a systems orientated approach; not just better sensors. Novel approaches or technologies will be sought that enable more effective sensor systems, where the different elements across hardware and software can be integrated more effectively and flexibly as an end to end system.
- A second area where we are keen to stimulate proposals is in the bio-inspired engineering; sensor systems that are inspired by nature. The natural world – whether it be the human eye, a dog’s nose or a shark's ability to detect the weak electric fields given off by their prey – has some very high performing sensor systems. e.g. It is not just the great eyesight of a hawk but how it is able to survey and process a huge area for the smallest prey.
This event is not a themed call, but CDE would welcome proposals stimulated by this briefing through its standing open call for innovation.
