Events and Calls

Events

The MOD’s science and technology research programme is open to any idea that can contribute to UK Defence - on any subject and at any time. Proposals should be made via the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE).

In order to work effectively with all suppliers, current and future, large and small, there events held to review work, explain the challenges that our Armed Forces face and the opportunities for companies and organisations to help to address them.

Future events are listed with brief descriptions and for many events you will be able to apply online. Where possible we will publish online copies of presentations under "Past Events and Calls".

In particular, CDE holds regular events on key issues as well as specific "calls for proposals" (see below). These events are designed to encourage submissions to the CDE (see the main CDE pages for more information) and are open to all suppliers but are particularly recommended for new suppliers unfamiliar with defence, small organisations or academia. Due to high demand, attendance is normally limited to a maximum of two people from any one organisation.

We have also included other events that may be of interest to the science and technology community, but are not necessarily directly connected to science|innovation|technology or MOD. Some of these events may be commercial and some may charge fees; MOD makes no recommendation and takes no responsibility for these types of events.

Calls For Proposals

As well as our open door policy, we periodically call for proposals on special topics, normally launched at a CDE seminar. Consequently, upcoimg calls will appear first under "Future events and calls". After the event they will move to the "Current calls for proposals" section until the deadline expires (normally about 6 weeks after the launch event). Thereafter all information will be archived in the "Past events and calls".

Programmes resulting from these calls will normally be short and sharp to identify solutions with the potential to be rapidly deployed to the front line or provide proof of concept that may lead to a more extensive research programme.

These specific "calls for proposals" use the same CDE submission process but are different in three ways:

  1. they address a specific problem or need;
  2. they often have ring-fenced funding;
  3. there is a cut-off date after which the proposals are assessed against each other.
