HMS Astute submarine enters service

With the ability to circumnavigate the world submerged without refuelling using nuclear-powered technology and manufacturing oxygen from seawater, Asute is quieter and 50 percent bigger than any of the current fleet. Able to carry heayweight torpedos and cruise missiles and with a world beating sonar system, she will operate around the globe and provide fighting power to the RN in future decades.

Soldier Portable Charger lightens soldier's load

The charger developed by MOD scientists harvests energy from used batteries, solar panels and vehicles, transferring it into spares. During daylight hours a solar mat - no larger than folded A4 paper and one square metre when deployed - is hooked to a SPC unit along with the battery that needs charging and the power begins to transfer.
