MOD have appointed Professor Vernon Gibson FRS as Chief Scientific Adviser. Gibson has a distinguished background in academic research and has also worked in the commercial sector. He will take up the post in July, succeeding Professor Sir Mark Welland who returns to an academic post at Cambridge

Around 60 percent of the £400 million MOD non-nuclear defence research programme is delivered by industry. MOD is inviting suppliers to meet the new Director Programme Office Richard Brooks to find out more about the work of the Programme Office and how to get involved.

Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology Peter Luff spoke at this week's Centre for Defence Enterprise showcase in London.
Speaking to SME's and other industry representatives, he praised the work of CDE and announced plans to develop further support for SMEs:"It is essential that small and medium sized enterprises have their own platform within the defence industry. Championing these firms requires us actively to encourage and drive greater pull-through."

National Security Through Technology recognises the success of MOD's Centre for Defence Enterprise. Expansion will include more support to SMEs including developing a 'marketplace' scheme to promote the best projects. This and other measures will support SMEs, help them grow and encourage work with the main defence suppliers, MOD and other government departments. The first 'marketplace' will be held on 1 November.

MOD staff can now access over 200,000 science and technical reports from Dstl's Athena information system. Sources include MOD R&D and test and evaluation programmes, but also include relevant items from across UK MOD, academia and industry, as well as other government departments and
