Air and Helicopters

A Typhoon F2 multi-role fighter in flight

Air power remains a fundamental component of UK defence. A wide range of technologies are needed to support fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters in their diverse roles, which range from air-to-air combat and attacking targets on the ground, to training, transport and tanker activities.

Manned aircraft remain a priority, while the uses of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) are explored. UAVs are an emerging system in aerospace and whilst there are powerful drivers for their development and employment, there are significant challenges to achieving advanced combat capable UAVs.

As well as superior performance, there is also an opportunity for technological innovation to challenge the traditional economics and costs of the development, management and operation of air systems.
